The Australian outpaced McLaren rival Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.055 seconds, while Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel starts from the second row.
“The session went pretty well, with the exception of the only Option run in Q2,” Webber explained during the post-qualifying press conference.
“That Q2 lap wasn’t very smooth, but the other two laps were good. The boys did a great job with the car, again there have been some very late nights in the lead up to this event, so we recovered well.
“We got it all together in the end, I was thinking on my in-lap that if someone gets me then they deserve it because I couldn’t have got much more out of it. It was a pretty good lap, so it’s very satisfying to see that no one got through at the end there, because it’s a bit of an anxious wait
